Numbers are meaningless if audiences cannot associate them to real life scenarios – namely theirs.  Not to say that numbers have little impact because they do.  However, statistics with bullets are boring and ineffective in a Powerpoint slide while a graphic chart has much more impact and doesn’t lead to quite as many blank stares.

A good decision is made on knowledge and not numbers.

Presentations have two simple elements: the presenter and the material.  Both have to work together to create an engaging message.  Only then does it become relevant and memorable.

If you were to say that 85% of technology bids are not itemized, inaccurate, and over priced with a written shopping list. This message is intangible and difficult to connect with impact.

Now reconstruct this message and say something like this.  Of the 100 people in this room, 85 of you will be over charged and under served.  You just connected with your audience and made that 85% number relevant and memorable.

Numbers alone won’t connect with your audience, but in the right context those same numbers will have a lasting impact.
